Biologics' Role in Achieving Early and Sustained Remission: Real-World Insights from Lupus Case Discussion Forum

On 26 April 2025, approximately 20 healthcare professionals gathered for the Hong Kong Lupus Case Discussion Forum, moderated by Prof. CC Mok and Prof. KL Lee. The event featured esteemed speakers who shared invaluable insights into optimizing SLE management and their clinical experiences. Prof. Luís Inês highlighted the importance of achieving early and sustained remission to prevent organ damage and shared the recent advancements in SLE disease activity indices. Prof. Chen Ming-Han discussed the biologics experience with SLE patients, offering crucial insights into steroid-sparing strategies within the real-world Taiwan setting.

Additionally, the forum featured engaging case studies presented by the two speakers and Prof. Shirley Chan. These discussions facilitated in-depth interactions between Hong Kong and experts from Taiwan and Portugal. This cross-regional dialogue served as a valuable platform for sharing knowledge and improving strategies in SLE care across diverse healthcare settings.

Advancing Treatment Goals and Strategies in Lupus Care

On July 3, 2025, a total of 109 healthcare professionals participated in the Joint Societies SLE Symposium, co-organized by the Hong Kong Society of Rheumatology, Hong Kong Society of Nephrology, and Hong Kong Society for Paediatric Rheumatology.

The symposium featured a multidisciplinary panel of experts, including Dr. Mok Chi Chiu (Rheumatologist), Professor Anders Hans-Joachim (Nephrologist), Professor Yap Yat Hin Desmond (Nephrologist), and Dr. Ho Chi Hang Assunta (Paediatric Rheumatologist) , who delivered lectures and facilitated discussions.

The symposium focused on advancing the management of lupus by providing comprehensive insights into the latest clinical guidelines and therapeutic objectives. It addressed critical topics, including the identification of suitable patients and the determination of the optimal timing for initiating biologic therapies as steroid-sparing and disease-modifying treatments for systemic lupus erythematosus. In addition, real-world case studies on systemic lupus erythematosus and lupus nephritis were discussed.

This event served as an invaluable platform for the exchange of knowledge and practical expertise, fostering a deeper understanding and collaboration between the speakers and participants in the field of lupus management.

Symposium On Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and ANCA Vasculitis

Insights from a Nephrologist on Managing High-Risk Lupus Nephritis Patients On July 5, 2025, the HKSR symposium brought together approximately 60 healthcare professionals. Prof. Hans-Joachim Anders, a distinguished Professor of Nephrology at the University of Munich (LMU), delivered a comprehensive lecture addressing renal risks in lupus nephritis. His presentation explored strategies to reduce renal risk from a nephrology perspective, including discussions on pathogenesis, pseudo lupus nephritis, treatment objectives, immunotherapy, medication adherence, and chronic kidney disease management. He also emphasized tailored approaches for high-risk patients, advocating for the early use of triple combination therapy with biologics to effectively control the underlying disease, prevent flare-ups, and mitigate renal progression. Additionally, Prof. Anders presented a challenging case study, fostering an engaging and insightful discussion among attendees.
